Work Readiness Services
The skills developed in CGS’ Work Readiness Services Program prepare students for a variety of occupations:
- RETAIL MERCHANDISING: This course prepares our students for competitive employment as a Sales Associate, Cashier or Stock Clerk in department stores, specialty and fashion shops, discount stores, and drug store chains. The student acquires an array of practical skills such as customer service, selling techniques, knowledge of stock and inventory control, ticketing/tagging/ labeling, cashiering, merchandising display, gift wrapping, packing and bow-making, store security and theft detection, and how merchandise is returned and payments are refunded.
- OFFICE SUPPORTS: This class prepares students for competitive employment in a variety of support services roles such as Mailroom Associate, Document Imaging Specialist, Administrative Aide, Copy Clerk or Receptionist. The students learn to sort mail, use copy and scanning machines as well as hand-held computers to record incoming and outgoing mail. They also are trained to run a Pitney Bowes Digital Mailing System (postage meter) and become familiar with general post office requirements. Additional training is also offered on indoor and outdoor Messenger services, Stock Room Management and Office Supply Distribution.
- FOOD SERVICES: This course prepares students for competitive employment in the field of food preparation and the food service industry. Our graduates become skilled as Sandwich Makers, Dining Room or Dish Room Attendants, Food Servers or Counter Service Associates in hospital, corporate, catering and other restaurant settings. The students learn a variety of skills in such areas as customer service, basic food preparation techniques, proper utilization of knives, dining room service, sandwich making, sanitation and food health and safety, dish room maintenance, and food delivery.
In addition to course instruction, CGS’ Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors provide individual and group counseling, teach stress management techniques, and help students to develop workplace coping skills; appropriate behavior and relationships. This comprehensive approach enables our students to graduate with both the vocational and the social skills required in today’s highly competitive job market.
CGS’ Job Development and Placement services are incorporated into our Work Readiness Program. Our Employment Specialists provide hands-on job placement and follow-up services to every graduate. CGS’ community-based internships, classroom instruction, and a well-coordinated support system enables our students to make a smooth and sustainable transition from school to employment. CGS graduates are well-prepared for the world of work.
